Her eyes flashed open. A quick intake of air, silent - even though she wanted to scream. One of her rare nightmares rocking her world. And hardly in the good way. Her dark eyes scan the tent she was in. Tensing a little at the warmth of strong arms around her.
Safe.
She thinks the singular word. Safe. She was. She knew she was. But her body still wouldn't uncoil. The images of her nightmare assaulting her. Tears threaten to come. Echos of pain that her mind won't form, she just knew there was pain but couldn't relive the true pain. So she just aches. She swallows hard - her throat not wanting to work after having swallowed her scream.
Her eyes move quietly to rest on the arm of the man holding her. No, not like a lover would hold another. No, not because they were lovers - because they were not. She sighs softly and shifts in his arms. Her head going to rest against his chest. Listening quietly to his heart beat.
Thump. Tha Thump. Tha Thump. Tha thump.
Her eyes shut and she tries to calm herself. Not willing to wake him. Not willing to leave the safety of his arms. Hearing the nasty words echo in her head from a past long gone. She hadn't heard anything of him in ... a year? Had it been a year? Maybe he's dead. Maybe he couldn't repeat the past anymore. Lots of maybe's....
Safe.
Tha Thump. Tha Thump.
She inhales. Warmth. She actually takes a moment and nuzzles into him some. Needing that closeness. She swallows again, this time it was easier. She had started spending time with him because she owed him. He saved her life. And she knew he was lonely, so she offered friendship. And the friendship was what they had between them. It was comfortable. It was calm. It was relaxing. She trusted. Truly trusted to be close to someone since her mate left.
She sighs, thinking of him. Her heart aches a little and she shut her eyes tight for a moment. No, she didn't think he left because of her. But does she feel hurt and angry all the same? Yes, both together. She turns her head to rest her cheek against his chest again. Trying to relax, maybe get another hour of sleep. That would make it... probably... four. Four hours was a lot.
Tha Thump. Tha Thump.
His heart beat lulled her. Relaxed her. Her eyes drifted open for a moment, then slowly shut again. Her own heart settling again. The nightmare lulled into nothingness. Still memories echo, but their words are lost in the simple calm of the heart beat.
